About Kalte Kerwa Küps

The Galluskirchweih in Küps, colloquially known as "Kalte Kerwa" (Cold Kirchweih), is the traditional autumn Kirchweih of the Frankenwald market in the district of Kronach. Around St. Gallus' Day in October, the town centre around the town hall transforms into an atmospheric autumn and farmers' market with regional products, autumnal floristry, and high-quality handicrafts. Since 2019, the Küpser Vereinsmeile (club mile) has complemented the festivities: local clubs present themselves with hands-on activities, music, and information stands. The local inns invite visitors for hearty refreshments – a convivial autumn day for the entire region.

The "Kalte Kerwa" – Autumn Kirchweih in Küps

The Galluskirchweih in Küps is one of the fixed traditional dates in the Upper Franconian event calendar. Because it is celebrated in the cooler season around the feast day of St. Gallus (16 October), the fitting name "Kalte Kerwa" (Cold Kirchweih) has become established in common parlance – in contrast to the summer St. Jakobus Kirchweih ("Warme Kerwa" or Warm Kirchweih) in July. Küps is located in the district of Kronach in the state of Bavaria, at the gateway to the Frankenwald, and presents itself at its finest this weekend.

Autumn and Farmers' Market around the Town Hall

The centrepiece of the Kirchweih is the Autumn and Farmers' Market, which extends around the Küps town hall. The market vendors offer a deliberately high-quality selection related to the golden season:

  • regional specialities and homemade products
  • autumnal floristry and arrangements
  • handicrafts made from clay, metal, wood, stone, ceramics, and fabric
  • autumnal and timeless decoration and gift ideas

A Sunday with extended shopping hours integrates the local retail trade and makes the Kirchweih Sunday a family-friendly shopping and strolling day.

The Küpser Vereinsmeile

Since 2019, the Küpser Vereinsmeile has enriched the Galluskirchweih. Here, the local clubs present themselves to the public with attractions, musical contributions, hands-on activities, and information stands. The club mile is an expression of the vibrant community life in the market town of Küps and gives visitors an insight into local volunteer engagement.

Refreshments and Franconian Conviviality

In Franconia, it is traditional to stop at the inns during the Kirchweih. The Küps innkeepers serve Franconian specialities, and when the autumn weather turns cooler, the "Kalte Kerwa" ensures warm, convivial hours in the guest rooms. The Frankenwald Tourism Association counts the Galluskirchweih among the characteristic autumn events of the region.

Tradition in the Frankenwald

Kirchweihen continue to shape the course of the year in Upper Franconia to this day. The Galluskirchweih combines a church festival, a farmers' market, and club life into a harmonious whole – and is thus an authentic example of Franconian customs and traditions in the district of Kronach.
