518th Gallimarkt — Grand Harbour Fireworks on October 16, 2026
The Gallimarkt Leer is one of the oldest and largest Volksfeste in Northern Germany. Its roots date back to the early 16th century; the market day around St. Gall's Day (October 16) gave the festival its name. In 2026, the 518th edition will be celebrated — a testament to the market's enduring appeal to visitors from all over East Frisia, the Emsland region, and the Netherlands.
The emotional highlight of the Gallimarkt is the grand fireworks display over Leer's harbour every year. On Friday, October 16, 2026, starting at 10 PM, thousands of pyrotechnic effects will illuminate the night sky above the historic old town. The picturesque backdrop of the weigh house, town hall, and harbour basin makes the spectacle one of the most beautiful fireworks displays on the North Sea coast.
The fireworks are part of a packed weekend programme:
The Gallimarkt attracts several hundred thousand visitors to the city centre of Leer for each edition. The harbour fireworks are the social highlight: families, showmen, and visitors from far and wide gather at the harbour basin, in the restaurants, and along the quays to experience the spectacle.
The harbour promenade, Brunnenstraße, and the harbour bridge offer unobstructed views. Restaurants and cafés on the harbour are booked up early — reserve in advance.
Leer (Ostfriesland) train station is a 10-minute walk from the harbour. Via the A 31 motorway (Exit Leer). Park-and-Ride facilities on the outskirts are recommended due to large visitor numbers.
