A summery wine festival along the completely preserved medieval city wall in Freinsheim — a 1.3 km festival mile with 19 serving points.
Freinsheim is the Palatinate town with the completely preserved city wall — a medieval fortification that encircles the historic old town center and, with its walls, towers, and gates, is one of the rare examples of medieval city architecture in southern Germany. When the Stadtmauerfest begins on the third weekend in July, this backdrop becomes the stage for one of the most atmospheric Palatinate summer wine festivals.
The festival route follows the entire city wall for a length of 1.3 kilometers. At 19 serving points, Freinsheim's vintners and restaurateurs serve their wines and food — Rieslings, Pinot Blanc, Rosé wines, sparkling wine, and Palatinate classics like Saumagen, Flammkuchen, and Bratwurst. Between the stops, the path leads through narrow alleys, small squares, and romantic corners of the medieval old town.
The Stadtmauerfest spans four days, from Friday to Monday. Friday starts in the evening, Saturday offers a long festival evening, Sunday begins at noon with a Frühschoppen (morning pint), and Monday concludes with the typical Kerwemontag (fair Monday) wind-down.
The Stadtmauerfest has gained regional renown in recent years — visitors come from the Palatinate, from Mannheim, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, and increasingly from further afield. Despite its growing popularity, the festival has retained its character: the festival route is spacious enough to allow movement even when crowded, and the individual stands remain manageable.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven format: festival opening on Friday evening at 6 PM, continuous festival operation on Saturday and Sunday, and a wind-down on Monday. The 19 serving points along the 1.3 km city wall are operated by Freinsheim wineries and associations.
The festival mile follows the entire city wall, past wall sections, watchtowers, and historic city gates. Walking the entire route takes you past all 19 serving points and reveals the historic old town from an unusual perspective.
Free admission. Wines and food are paid for at the stands.
