FREI LUFT GALERIE Fürth
Three months of art in public space – murals, sculptures, and installations in Fürth
2026
About FREI LUFT GALERIE
FREI LUFT GALERIE — edition 2026
FREI LUFT GALERIE 2026
The 2026 edition features around a dozen works at various locations in Fürth's city center and surrounding districts. The installations respond to the peculiarities of their sites: an electrical substation in Hornschuchpromenade becomes a facade painting (Sascha Banck), a window in Königstraße becomes a floral composition (Tania Engelke), a building facade in Flößaustraße becomes a large mural (Mandy Schöne-Salter).
Participating Artists
The 2026 edition combines established and emerging voices from the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region and beyond. From wall murals to site-specific sculptures and poetic window installations, the program covers the spectrum of contemporary art in public spaces.

A Gallery Without Walls
The FREI LUFT GALERIE originated in 2020 during the pandemic from a simple idea: If galleries and museums are closed, art comes to the streets. What began as a solution of last resort has become a firm fixture of the Fürth summer cultural program. For five years, artists from Fürth, the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, and beyond have been transforming the city into a walkable gallery.
Three Months – Entire City – Free Access
For three months – in the summer of 2026 from June 28 to September 27 – the works can be continuously viewed in their locations. There is no admission fee, no opening hours, no ticket. The city itself is the exhibition space: central squares like Adenauer-Platz, facades on Königstraße, Schwabacher Straße, Flößaustraße, Hornschuchpromenade; green spaces along the Pegnitz river; hidden courtyards.
The Works in 2026
The 2026 edition includes, among others:
- Sascha Banck: "Hallo?" – Facade painting on the electrical substation in Hornschuchpromenade
- Guy Palumbo: "Um dieser Rose Willen" (For the Sake of This Rose) – Installation in Rosenstraße opposite the Stadthalle
- Mandy Schöne-Salter: "Mural" – Large-format wall painting at Flößaustraße 34

Further works will be released before and during the season by the City of Fürth and the participating artist collective.
Interactive Map as a Guide
A particular strength of the FREI LUFT GALERIE is its interactive map, which displays all works geolocated. Provided via the art platform SENF.xyz – the ideal tool for an independent art tour on foot or by bike.
What Distinguishes the Gallery
- Democratized Access to Art: no barriers, no admission fees, no opening hours
- Site-Specific Works: many installations respond to their specific location
- Diversity of Disciplines: murals, facade painting, sculpture, installation, window art, light works
- Combination of Established and Emerging Artists
- Urban Space as a Resonating Body: the festival sharpens the eye for familiar places
From Pandemic Project to Tradition
What began in 2020 as an emergency response to closures is now a firmly established series. The City of Fürth has institutionalized the format: it is supported by the Cultural Office with the artist collective and often connects to thematic focuses of the city's cultural calendar during the season. A supplementary exhibition, "Zugabe! From Outside to Inside," regularly showcases selected works from past seasons in indoor versions at kultur.lokal.fürth.
Fürth – Franconia's Creative Dual Heart
Fürth, an independent city with around 130,000 inhabitants, is located directly next to Nuremberg in the Middle Franconian conurbation. For decades, the city was overshadowed by its larger sister city; in recent years, Fürth has developed its own distinct cultural character – with the Stadttheater, the Comödie Fürth, the art gallery complex at the Rathaus, the Michaelis-Kirchweih, and the FREI LUFT GALERIE. The city of Neoclassical architecture and the Hornschuchpromenade provides the ideal backdrop for an art project focused on the outdoors.
