Flechtorf — Over 1000 Years of History
Flechtorf is a district of the municipality of Lehre in the Samtgemeinde Lehre (Helmstedt district) and is located north of Königslutter, south of the A2 Hannover–Berlin highway. The first documented mention of Flechtorf dates back over 1000 years — the exact dating will be documented by the organizing committee in the festival program. This millennium-old tradition is celebrated with the 1000+4 anniversary festival.
Thursday, April 30th — Dance into May
The festival weekend begins on Thursday evening with the traditional "Dance into May" in the festival tent at the fire station. From 8 PM, a live band or DJ will provide the atmosphere, celebrating the transition from April to May with music, dancing, and a collective toast. The entire village community comes together.
Friday, May 1st — Official Ceremony
On Friday — also Labour Day — the official ceremony will take place. The mayor of the Samtgemeinde Lehre, the district administrator of the Helmstedt district, representatives of the churches, and local associations will give welcoming speeches. A festive address and a look back at the 1000-year history will be the focus. This will be followed by a reception.
Saturday, May 2nd — Parade and Maypole
The highlight of the weekend is the grand parade on Saturday. Floats, marching bands, music groups, shooting clubs, the Flechtorf fire department, friendly associations from the Samtgemeinde, and themed floats will march through the decorated Flechtorf. Afterwards, the maypole will be ceremoniously erected on the village square — an old North German custom.
Sunday, May 3rd — 'Katerfrühstück'
The weekend concludes with the traditional 'Katerfrühstück' on Sunday morning — a North German version of brunch after a night of revelry, featuring herring salad, pickled herring ('Rollmöpse'), eggs, spreads, rolls, and coffee. A cozy festival finale that brings together all participants and guests once again.
A Centennial Festival for Flechtorf
The 1000+4 Years anniversary festival is the biggest celebration Flechtorf has experienced in generations. Preparations have been underway for years, and the organizing committee has involved the village community, associations, schools, and kindergartens in the planning. A festival to be remembered for a long time.
