Five summer evenings of open-air cinema in the historic Andernach Castle Garden
Andernach has developed a dense open-air program in recent years with its Kultursommer (Summer of Culture): around 20 events between May and September in the city's most beautiful locations, including concerts, readings, theater performances, film screenings, and family programs. The Filmnächte im Schlossgarten (Film Nights in the Castle Garden) are one of the most well-known events of this summer and attract a loyal audience from Andernach and the wider region every year.
The venue is the historic Schlossgarten (Castle Garden), which belongs to the former Electoral Castle of Andernach. The castle, built in the 13th century and rebuilt over the centuries, was once the residence of the Electors of Cologne. Today, it is a venue for cultural events and houses, among other things, the municipal cultural office. The adjacent Schlossgarten – a green oasis in the middle of the city – offers the ideal setting for an open-air cinema with its old trees, historic wall structure, and intimate atmosphere.
In 2026, the series runs from August 11 to 15 (Tuesday to Saturday) over five summer evenings. The program is divided into two parts: On Friday (August 14) and Saturday (August 15), there are additional children's screenings starting at 3:30 PM, appealing to younger audiences – usually animated or family films, current or classic. The evening screenings for adults begin at 7 PM with admission and pre-program, with the film starting around 9 PM as dusk falls.
The film selection varies annually and follows a mix of current blockbusters, popular classics, arthouse highlights, and films with regional connections. The exact program will be announced by the Andernach Cultural Office via andernach-kultur.de.
Visitors to the Filmnächte should bring warm clothing – summer evenings in the Schlossgarten can get cool. Pillows or a blanket are helpful; seating is usually provided. The on-site catering offers drinks, snacks, and often hot meals for the screenings.
The 2026 edition continues the established series. The exact film program will be announced in advance by the Andernach Cultural Office. A mix of current blockbusters, classics, and arthouse films is expected for the evening program, as well as family and animated films for the children's screenings.
