2nd Edition — Meeting and City Festival around the Börnekenhalle with international cuisine, music, and dance
Lehre is a member municipality and the main town of the Lehre collective municipality in the western Helmstedt district. The municipality is located between Wolfsburg and Braunschweig and benefits from its convenient location. The population is heterogeneous — long-established Lower Saxons live here alongside newcomers from the Wolfsburg area (especially VW workers with international backgrounds).
The Fest der Kulturen is not intended as a folkloristic showcase, but as a meeting format. People of different origins cook together, make music, present their associations, and engage in conversation. The goal is not to stare at the 'foreigner', but to experience things together.
The culinary stands are at the center. Associations, families, and local restaurants present specialties from their countries or cultures of origin — from Turkish Köfte to Italian Pasta, Polish Pierogi, Syrian Falafel, Eritrean Injera, to Thai Soup or German Bratwurst. The selection reflects the diversity of the municipality.
Migration associations, sports clubs with an international profile, church initiatives, schools, kindergartens, and political organizations present their work. The stands offer an opportunity to learn about social engagement in Lehre.
Musical and dance performances from various cultures alternate on stage — from Oriental dance to Latin American folklore, Turkish folk dances, German folk music, to modern crossover formats. The program reflects the profile of the participating associations and families.
For the youngest visitors, there is face painting and child-friendly activity stations. Cultural diversity is also made visible here — for example, through Henna tattoos or face painting motifs from different cultures.
On October 2, 2026 — on the eve of German Unity Day — the nationwide "Lange Nacht der Demokratie" (Long Night of Democracy) will take place. The Fest der Kulturen Lehre is deliberately scheduled for this day to reinforce the message of diversity, encounter, and democracy.
The complete program for 2026, including all participating associations, bands, dance groups, and stand occupants, will be published by the municipality of Lehre shortly before the event on lehre.de. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of the 1st edition:
Festival opening in the late afternoon with a welcome address, continuous culinary service at the stands, stage program in several blocks spread throughout the evening, information stands continuously staffed, family program running in parallel.
