Four days of funfair around the Stiftskirche – from Shrove Saturday to Shrove Tuesday
The Fastnachtsmarkt Kaiserslautern is the traditional funfair accompanying the Lautrer Carnival season. Unlike the major funfairs – Maikerwe and Oktoberkerwe – the Fastnachtsmarkt takes place not on the fairgrounds, but directly in the city center: in the pedestrian zone around the Stiftskirche. The combination of a commercial funfair, carnival tradition, and downtown foot traffic makes the market a special meeting point for the Lautrer Carnival weeks.
The focus is on rides for different age groups. A nostalgic Ferris wheel – traditionally smaller and of historical design than the large modern ones – forms the visual centerpiece. Children's carousels, smaller games of skill, and candy stalls cater to families. Snack stalls offering bratwurst, fries, crêpes, candied almonds, gingerbread hearts, and Palatinate specialties provide refreshments. Mulled wine is a popular accompaniment in the cool February temperatures.
The market opening on Shrove Saturday, February 14th, 2026, coincides with the last weekend before Rose Monday. On Rose Monday, February 16th, the market, along with regional carnival parades and the dense carnival activity in the city, reaches its first peak. The conclusion on Shrove Tuesday, February 17th, coincides with the downtown carnival on Stiftsplatz – the market and stage program together form the grand finale of the Lautrer Carnival season.
Over the decades, the Fastnachtsmarkt has developed its own character. In often still wintry, occasionally snow-kissed weather, with fairy lights strung between the pedestrian zone buildings and the noise of carousels and costumed visitors, an atmosphere emerges that has nothing to do with the big summer funfairs. It is a compact, urban market that combines tradition with downtown conviviality.
