The Kannenbäckerland

Ransbach-Baumbach is located in the center of the Kannenbäckerland, a unique ceramic region in Rhineland-Palatinate. The centuries-old clay deposits have shaped a distinct artisanal tradition here, which gained European significance in the 16th century with the invention of the characteristic blue-gray salt-glazed stoneware. Today, the Kannenbäckerland is the only member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Folk Art and Crafts in the category of ceramics in Germany.

The European Potters' Market

Since 1985, the town of Ransbach-Baumbach has organized the European Potters' Market — a market that consciously targets not only the German but the entire European ceramics scene. Exhibitors from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal, and many other countries travel to Ransbach-Baumbach annually to present their works.

Diversity of Ceramics

What distinguishes the Potters' Market is the enormous stylistic and technical range. Functional ceramics such as tableware, jugs, and vases meet purely artistic sculptures. Classic firing techniques such as salt firing, wood firing, and Raku are represented, as are contemporary design approaches. Specialists in historical replicas (such as pipeware or Renaissance ceramics) complement the offerings.

Market Atmosphere in the Town

Unlike a classic indoor market, the Potters' Market takes place in the streets and squares of the town center. This open use of urban space gives the event a special atmosphere: market visitors stroll through the town, discover stalls in unexpected corners, and can establish direct contact with the artists and craftspeople.

Cultural Accompanying Events

The Potters' Market is often supplemented by cultural accompanying events: demonstrations on the potter's wheel, demonstrations of traditional firing techniques, special exhibitions in the Westerwald Ceramics Museum, as well as lectures and workshops. The festival thus also serves as an educational event about European ceramic culture.
