Pfalztheater production between May and June under the open sky at the Gartenschau grounds
The Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern is one of the largest multi-genre theaters in Rhineland-Palatinate and a defining cultural institution in the region. With Don Quijote as an open-air production in 2026, the theater is venturing into a special format: instead of the usual staging on the main stage, the production will be presented outdoors on the Gartenschau grounds. Performances will take place between May 15 and June 28, 2026, on selected dates.
Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quijote, one of the foundational works of the modern novel, has a rich history of stage adaptations. From Minkus' ballet version to the musical Man of La Mancha and numerous play adaptations, the range is vast. How the Pfalztheater will interpret the material in its 2026 production will be part of the season's program announcement – the open-air production could be realized as a play, ballet, or musical.
The open-air production utilizes the expansive park landscape of the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau as its stage backdrop. This allows for unusual scenic solutions: the vastness of the park enables epic horse-riding and travel scenes, the interplay between open and intimate areas supports the structure of the novel's episodes, and the natural late spring light shapes the performance's atmosphere. Performances are usually held in the late afternoon or early evening, allowing the show to unfold into the sunset.
The production is a special collaboration between the Pfalztheater and the Gartenschau as part of Kaiserslautern's 750th-anniversary celebration. Both institutions are pillars of the city's cultural and tourist profile; their cooperation underscores the anniversary year's ambition to bring multiple stakeholders together for joint projects. For the audience, this creates a theatrical experience that significantly differs from the classic seated performances in the theater building.
