The City by the Sea

The Platz An der Lilie is one of Hildesheim's central city squares, within walking distance of the market square, the pedestrian zone, and the Mariendom Cathedral. During the summer weeks, it is traditionally transformed into an urban beach: around 100 tonnes of sand form the foundation, complemented by deck chairs, sun umbrellas, a wooden bar, standing tables, sports and games areas, and the gbg-Beachlounge as the central gastronomic hub. Those needing a short break from city life will find an atmosphere here that spontaneously evokes memories of a beach holiday.

Beach Sports and Games

Cornhole and KanJam – both throwing and skill games originating from the USA – are among the beach sports on offer, which can be played for free on site. Beach volleyball variations, table tennis tables, and small skill stations are also regularly available. School classes, clubs, and groups can also use the area for their own beach tournaments.

gbg-Beachlounge

The gbg-Beachlounge is the gastronomic meeting point at Citybeach. It offers drinks (cocktails, beer, wine, non-alcoholic specialties), small meals, ice cream, and suitable snacks for balmy summer evenings. DJ sets and live music often provide the right atmosphere on many evenings.

Seven Weeks of Summer Everyday Life

Unlike a classic festival, Citybeach is a summer event open for seven weeks. This makes it a part of the city rather than a one-off event: Hildesheim residents visit regularly – after work, on weekends with family, with friends for a sundowner drink. Day tourists visiting Hildesheim and the UNESCO World Heritage Site also find a place here to relax after sightseeing.

Family-Friendly

Families benefit from a spacious sandy area where children can dig, build, and play. Deck chairs and sun umbrellas are freely accessible without any obligation to purchase. On weekends, family programs, children's interactive activities, or small stage acts are occasionally offered.

Free Admission

Admission to Citybeach is free. You only pay for what you consume at the gbg-Beachlounge or at occasional special stands. Playing with the beach sports equipment is also free of charge.
