The first Christmas market in Rhineland-Palatinate with 60 wooden huts and over 300,000 points of light on Berliner Platz
The Ludwigshafen Christmas Market on Berliner Platz opens every year significantly earlier than most markets in the region, thus kicking off the festive season in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. For six weeks, families, commuters, students, and visitors from Mannheim, the Palatinate, and the Baden hinterland gather amidst Advent wreaths, incense smokers, and steaming mugs of mulled wine.
With its approximately 60 lovingly designed wooden huts, the market forms a compact, easily navigable village of stalls right at one of the city's most important transport hubs. Vendors from all over the Vorderpfalz present Christmas tree decorations, ceramics, woodwork, honey products, jewelry, and creative gift designs. The culinary range extends from classic Palatinate Saumagen snacks to bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, and doughnuts, as well as sweet specialties like candied almonds, chocolate-covered fruits, and children's punch.
What sets the Ludwigshafen market apart from the multitude of regional Christmas markets is its close integration with the TWL Lichterzauber. Technische Werke Ludwigshafen transforms Berliner Platz and its adjacent avenues year after year into an atmospheric light spectacle. More than 300,000 individual points of light and over nine kilometers of fairy lights frame trees, facades, and paths. Light arches, illuminated fir trees, and lit pavilions create photo opportunities that make the market a popular destination, especially in the evening.
The market is open Sunday to Thursday from 12 PM to 9 PM, and Fridays and Saturdays from 12 PM to 9:30 PM. Berliner Platz is optimally connected to public transport: light rail lines from Mannheim and the Vorderpfalz stop directly at the market, allowing for a relaxed journey without the hassle of finding parking. The season is accompanied by a planned Sunday shopping day, which further enlivens the city center and combines shopping trips with a market visit.
Beyond its purely commercial function, the market plays an important role as a social meeting place in a heavily industrialized city. School and kindergarten choirs, brass bands, and clubs regularly perform on the small stage, contributing to the family-friendly atmosphere. For children, there is traditionally a carousel and visits from St. Nicholas.
The concept for the 2026 season relies on the proven mix of tradition and light staging. TWL expands its lighting concept year by year; further accents and photo spots are expected as part of the Magic of Lights. School and community choirs, brass bands, and music groups from the city provide a varied stage program on weekends. The detailed program will be published by the organizer LUKOM in good time before the market opens on the official website.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer and autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
