Spring Wine Hike in the Steep Slopes
The Mosel region perhaps shows its most beautiful side in spring. The vines sprout, the vineyards glow in delicate green, the slopes are dotted with spring flowers, and the Mosel carries the fresh meltwater from the Hunsrück. “Bugberg-Live!” uses this special moment to offer an open tasting hike in the steep vineyards above Alken.
The “Bugberg” site is one of the most traditional vineyards in the Untermosel. The south-west-facing slate terraces produce mineral-driven Rieslings of considerable quality. In spring, the Bugberg shows itself in all its glory: the vines sprout, the first blossoms appear, and the view from the slope down into the Mosel valley with Thurant Castle is breathtaking.
During the hike, the stands of the participating Alken vintners are set up along the path in the vineyards. Hikers traverse the sites with a festival glass in hand, stop at the stations, taste the current wines — especially Rieslings from the previous harvest, aged Burgunders, and sparkling wine specialties — and talk directly with the vintners at their place of work.
The route is moderately difficult and requires sturdy footwear and some stamina. Those who have experienced the steep slopes through their own hike will understand the Mosel wines with new depth — the effort put into each glass becomes tangibly apparent. “Bugberg-Live!” is therefore more than a wine event: it is a lesson in Mosel wine culture, embedded in a sensory spring hike.
“Bugberg-Live!” 2026 will take place on Sunday, April 26. The tasting stands will be set up along the hiking route in the Bugberg vineyards. The start and end point are in Alken. The festival glass and tasting tokens will be issued at the starting point.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Alken Vintners Association in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Highlights: Spring wine hike in the steep slopes of the Bugberg, tasting directly with the vintners in the vineyard, spring bloom and Mosel panorama, view of Thurant Castle, Rieslings of current vintages, sensory learning experience about Mosel wine culture.
Festival glass and tasting tokens available at the starting point.
Getting there: By car via the B49. By train to Löf or Brodenbach, then by bus or passenger ferry to Alken.
Admission: Festival glass and tasting tokens available at the starting point.
Tip: Sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, sufficient water. The steep slopes require surefootedness.
