Three days of neighbourhood festival in the An der Wied pedestrian zone with Pretzel Prince/Princess crowning and Funzelabend
Mainz consists of over two dozen districts, each cultivating its own history, identity, and festival culture. Bretzenheim, located in the west of the city at the transition to the Rhenish Hesse hill country, is Mainz's most populous district and looks back on a long history as an independent municipality before being incorporated into Mainz in 1969. The Bretzenheim clubs passionately maintain this district identity – and the annual Bretzenheim Pretzel Festival is its greatest expression.
The festival takes place in the An der Wied pedestrian zone, the central shopping and artery of the district. For three days, stalls, a stage, play areas, refreshment stands, and family activities line the street. The concept is a classic German neighbourhood festival: food and drinks are run by the clubs themselves, the proceeds go to club activities, and the programme is supported by the entire club family. Pretzels and wine, bratwurst and Kapellmainzer music, face painting for children and wheelbarrow races – the mix is tried-and-tested, and the local charm defines the festival.
The festival owes its name to the Pretzel Princess and Pretzel Prince. Each year, two young residents of Bretzenheim are chosen as representatives of the district during a festive crowning ceremony – a tradition inspired by carnival formats, combining them with the pretzel motif. The crowning traditionally takes place on Saturday evening, followed by a performance by Kapellmainzer, one of Mainz's best-known carnival and party bands, which are also a firm fixture in the Mainz festival calendar outside the carnival season.
The Funzelabend on Friday is the romantic opening of the festival: the pedestrian zone is illuminated by hundreds of lanterns, fairy lights, and 'Funzeln' (an old Mainz term for small lanterns), and the traditional wheelbarrow race provides laughs and sporting competition among the clubs. Sunday is dedicated entirely to families, with a children's programme, family games, and a relaxed conclusion. For the people of Bretzenheim, the Pretzel Festival is the highlight of the district year – a celebration where old neighbours meet, new residents are integrated, and the district's character is shown in a concentrated form.
The three festival days in 2026 follow the proven Bretzenheim Pretzel Festival concept. Friday evening is designed as an atmospheric opening, transforming the pedestrian zone into a sea of lights and incorporating the wheelbarrow race as a humorous sporting competition. Saturday concentrates on the central programme points: the festive crowning of the Pretzel Princess and Pretzel Prince in the early evening, followed by the musical highlight with the Kapellmainzer party band, which brings typical Mainz festival atmosphere to the stage. Sunday is aimed at families with children, with a calmer programme, family games, and a conclusion in the late afternoon.
