Five days of Heimatfest with a sea of lights, parade, and community life in Sontra
The BREiTWiESN-Fest is the major Volks- und Heimatfest (folk and heritage festival) of the North Hessian town of Sontra in the Werra-Meißner district. The name itself signals its programmatic direction: the unusual spelling with capital letters gives the festival a distinctive character and reflects the regional pronunciation of "breite Wiese" (wide meadow) – the very grounds that serve as the festival's main venue. The organizer is the Arbeitskreis BREiTWiESN in cooperation with ASH Sontra (Arbeitskreis Sontraer Heimat- und Volksfest). Numerous local clubs are involved in the organization and execution.
In 2026, the festival runs from Thursday, June 11, to Monday, June 15. This unusually long festival duration – five days – connects the BREiTWiESN-Fest with Pentecost, making it a major regional event that attracts not only Sontra but the entire Werra-Meißner district and neighboring regions. The opening on Thursday at 7 PM will be led by Mayor Thomas Eckhardt together with the traditional "Hänselmeister" of Sontra's folk festival tradition.
The programmatic highlight on Friday is the "Lichter-Meer Sontra" (Sea of Lights Sontra): Starting at 9 PM, families create artistic patterns with around 10,000 free tea lights on the meadow next to the festival tent. The tea lights are distributed at 7:45 PM, and the collective lighting begins at 9 PM. It's an unusual format, blending a participatory activity with a nocturnal urban landscape staging – and an image that regularly lands on the front page of North Hessian daily newspapers after the festival.
Musically, the BREiTWiESN-Fest relies on proven formats. On Friday evening from 9 PM, it's Disco with DJ BEN E, admission €7; a parental consent form is required for those under 18. On Saturday evening from 9 PM, the dance band Die Wiesenfelder takes over – a Schlager and party band act that turns the festival tent into a dance floor. The Monday finale features the Werra Power Partyband during the keg tapping.
Saturday is the most diverse day programmatically. From 10 AM, the BREiTWiESN-Cup, a football tournament for amateur teams, takes place. At 1:30 PM, the balloon competition and the subsequent Bällchen-Regatta (little ball race) – a playful regatta on the Sontra river with small water balls – start. At 2 PM, the coffee and cake service opens in the festival tent; between 2 PM and 5 PM, the showmen offer discounted ride prices (Family Day Light).
Sunday, June 14, combines festive and solemn elements. The day begins with a musical wake-up call by the town's music bands. At 9:30 AM, a wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the war memorial, followed by the ecumenical service at 10:30 AM. The highlight is the grand parade at 2 PM through the town center, featuring floats, music bands, and clubs.
The conclusion on Monday features two classic folk festival formats: the community breakfast at 10 AM in the festival tent, followed by the keg tapping at 11 AM with the Werra Power Partyband, who will keep the festival tent lively until 5 PM. As the last chords fade, a five-day festival period ends, during which the town of Sontra enters a state of celebration.
Sontra is a small town of about 7,700 inhabitants in the Werra-Meißner district. The town is located at the transition between the Stölzinger Gebirge mountains and the Werra Valley and is considered a rural address in North Hesse. The BREiTWiESN-Fest is one of the town's most important identity-forming events, mobilizing its club scene for five days. Advance ticket sales have been ongoing since May 11, 2026 – an indication of the event's significance for the region.
The 2026 edition marks Sontra's traditional Pentecost heritage festival. Advance ticket sales have been ongoing since May 11, 2026. The BREiTWiESN working group coordinates a detailed five-day program, involving Sontra's clubs in catering and program design. The symbolic patron for the 2026 season is the 30-member "Bella Promilla" amateur drinking team.
