Autumn Town Festival with Regional Market, Car Show, and Open Sunday Shopping
The Birkenfeld Town Festival is one of those formats deliberately tailored to the needs of a medium-sized town in rural Rhineland-Palatinate. Instead of a multi-day major event, the town concentrates the festival on a Sunday in October, combining it with the retail sector's Open Sunday Shopping, a market, stage program, and activities for families. The result is a day that has become an annual meeting point for many Birkenfeld residents with neighbors and acquaintances.
The regional market forms the heart of the event. Farmers, beekeepers, cheese producers, and bakers from the Hunsrück and the region showcase their products, supplemented by vendors of arts and crafts and personal care products. The town sets up a children's street around the market, offering various stations for different age groups – from face painting and hands-on workshops to small carousels. Local clubs use the stage for short demonstrations, ranging from dance groups and music bands to sports associations presenting interactive activities.
A special attraction is the car and tractor show, presenting vintage cars and historical agricultural machinery from regional collectors. Live music featuring folk, pop, and Schlager provides the musical backdrop. The shops in the city center open their doors between 1 PM and 6 PM, allowing for a seamless combination of shopping and festival visits. Admission is free, and parking spaces around the center are readily available.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the City of Birkenfeld in late summer. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years: market opening in the late morning, positioning of vintage cars and tractors in the morning, children's street all day, stage program starting at noon, shops opening from 1 PM, and the festival ending in the early evening.
