Bensersiel – Beach and Ferry Harbour
Bensersiel is the most important maritime district of the town of Esens. With its sandy beach, promenade, harbour, and ferry connection to the East Frisian island of Langeoog, Bensersiel is a classic North Sea resort with a high number of day visitors and holidaymakers. The annual Beach and Harbour Festival is the cultural and social highlight of the summer.
Four Days of Events on the East Harbour Side
From July 23rd to 26th, 2026 – Thursday to Sunday – the East Harbour side in Bensersiel will become the stage for a maritime festival. Organized by KBV "de Waterkant", a local initiative, the festival combines tradition, family orientation, and maritime atmosphere.
East Frisian Classics: Boßeln and Klüterbahn
Two specific East Frisian programme elements characterise the festival:
- Boßeln – the East Frisian team sport where a ball is thrown over asphalted or unpaved paths. Teams compete against each other on a marked course.
- Klüterbahn – an East Frisian folk race with a competitive character, which takes on different meanings depending on the edition.
Live Bands and Festival Stage
On the festival stage, live bands present a broad musical spectrum – from cover bands and regional artists to dance music ensembles. The programme is tailored to different generations and fills the days with live music until late at night.
Children's Activities and Family Programme
During the day, there is a family programme with children's activities: interactive stations, games, carousel rides, and creative workshops. The festival is consistently family-oriented and creates programme events for all age groups.
Sea Shanty Choirs and Parade
Maritime folklore is provided by the sea shanty choirs: traditional sailor songs are sung live, creating the fitting soundscape for the harbour backdrop. The highlight of the festival is the parade – with brass bands, club uniforms, festival floats, and maritime scenes.
Evening Events with Lantern Ambiance
The evening events are particularly atmospheric: illuminated boats in the harbour basin, lantern ambiance, live music, and catering create an intimate festival atmosphere. Anyone visiting Bensersiel on a summer evening will find the mix of sea air, maritime lighting, and live music a special experience.
