Traditional Marksmen Festival of the Bellheim Marksmen Association with King's Shoot, Festival Tent, and Coronation Evening
The Bellheim Marksmen Festival is part of German marksmen's festival culture, which ranks among the oldest club festivals in many Palatinate communities. The tradition of marksmen's associations dates back to the Middle Ages in German-speaking regions and has evolved over centuries into a mix of sporting discipline (shooting with air rifle, small-caliber rifle, pistol) and traditional customs.
The organizer is the Bellheim Marksmen Association, which operates the marksmen's clubhouse and organizes the King's Shoot as an annual highlight. The membership includes active sports shooters from adult, youth, and possibly women's categories.
The King's Shoot is the sporting core of the festival: Members of the Marksmen Association compete against each other in a separate classification, judged with an air rifle or small-caliber rifle on a special king's target. Whoever achieves the first hit on the last destroyed ring becomes the new Marksmen King or Queen. Vice-King titles are also awarded.
In the festival tent at the marksmen's clubhouse, the social part takes place parallel to the shooting competition: Classic Palatinate catering with bratwurst, steak, saumagen (a regional specialty), fries, accompanied by Palatinate wine and draft beer. On the coronation evening (usually Saturday evening), the new Marksmen King is ceremonially proclaimed, the old and new King's titles are handed over, and then everyone celebrates with dancing – with live music or a DJ set.
Saturday morning is dedicated to the King's Shoot competitions, in the afternoon the marksmen's parade in traditional costume takes place through the village, and in the evening the coronation evening with dancing follows. Sunday, with a celebratory church service, morning pint, and convivial catering, forms the relaxed following day.
