Overview

No performance of the Bamberger Totentanz took place in 2025 – the play is staged every two years (last performance 2024, next 2026). 2025 was the major preparation and conception year: pupils from the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium researched the last 125 years of Bamberg's history, Dr. Martin Beyer wrote the new text, Jochen Neurath composed the music, and casting for the citizen ensemble roles was carried out.

Preparation 2025

The Bamberger Totentanz is a biennial theatre project: performances take place every two years. After the premiere with Tanja Kinkel's text in October/November 2024, 2025 became the major preparation year for the next edition in 2026.

What Happened in 2025

Pupils from the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium, under the guidance of teacher Julia Behr, researched the most important events and personalities in Bamberg's city history over the last 125 years. Based on this material, author Dr. Martin Beyer wrote the new text. Composer Jochen Neurath, Cultural Prize winner of the City of Bamberg, composed new music for the sonic illustration of the decades. Casting for the approximately 100 citizen ensemble roles took place throughout the year. Director Nina Lorenz, Death actor Felix D'Angelo, and Festival Director Michael Hanisch simultaneously conceptualized the festival format, which will combine the Totentanz in 2026 with an accompanying program of exhibitions, readings, and concerts for the first time.
