Christmas market in one of the oldest towns in Saxony-Anhalt — Marktplatz Aschersleben
Aschersleben is considered the oldest documented town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt — first mentioned in the 11th century. Today, the town with just under 30,000 inhabitants is a small district town in the Salzlandkreis, characterized by half-timbered houses, a medieval town center, and a surprisingly rich cultural landscape. Every year during Advent, the Aschersleben Christmas Market takes place on the central market square, with views of the historic town hall and St. Stephen's Church — a classic small-town format with charm and tradition.
From November 27 to December 20, 2026 — that is, four full weeks — the market is open. Mulled wine and punch from regional vendors, roasted almonds, sausages, and potato pancakes, alongside craft stalls and gift items. For children, there are carousels and a miniature railway — classics of a family Christmas market. On each of the four Advent Sundays, Santa Claus visits the market square, and brass bands from the region perform.
The adjacent Aschersleben City Museum complements the market with its own Christmas exhibition — historical toys, Christmas pictures, Saxon folk art, and collections from the Salzlandkreis. A beautiful combination of tradition and city history that elevates the market beyond mere consumption.
Aschersleben is the district town of Salzlandkreis in the state of Saxony-Anhalt — a region between the Harz Mountains, the Saale, and the Magdeburger Börde. Mining (formerly), agriculture (today), and small-town structures shape the landscape here. The Christmas market is one of the town's central highlights in the winter season — alongside Bestehornpark, the Eulenspiegelturm, and St. Stephen's Church.
Four weeks of classic small-town Christmas market in the historic center of Aschersleben. The market stalls are arranged around the town hall and St. Stephen's Church; on Advent Sundays, brass music and Santa Claus's appearance provide family-friendly highlights. The City Museum complements the event with its own Christmas exhibition — a wonderful combination for a whole Advent afternoon.
