The largest city festival in the Upper Palatinate in the historic city center of Amberg
The Amberger Altstadtfest is the central summer event of the Upper Palatinate district town of Amberg. The festival takes over the entire historic old town: Marktplatz, Rathausplatz, Rathausstraße, Bahnhofstraße, Eichenforstplatz, Georgenstraße, Schrannenplatz, and numerous smaller squares and alleys. A colorful mix of local and supra-regional bands perform on several stages, interspersed with program contributions from schools, clubs, aid organizations, and cultural initiatives.
The central main stage is traditionally located at the town hall on the Marktplatz; the mayor officially opens the festival there. From there, the program branches out into the surrounding streets. Schools can participate with artistic, musical, and sporting contributions, clubs manage stalls and small stages, and restaurants and breweries provide the catering.
The concept focuses on diversity of culture and culinary arts: 'Bands across the entire spectrum of traditional and modern music,' plus cabaret, theater, concerts, dance, exhibitions, and lectures. Regional and fairly traded products are preferred for food; only beer from local breweries is served. This clearly positions the Amberger Altstadtfest as a community festival, not just a stage-filled festival mile.
With the 2026 season, the Altstadtfest reaches the round number 50. For this occasion, the festival will be held as a 3-day event (Friday to Sunday, June 12–14, 2026) for the first time – instead of the usual 2 days. The official program for the 50th edition will be successively published from June 2026 via the Altstadtfest app and die-altstadt-feiert.de.
Amberg is an independent city in the Upper Palatinate, located about 60 km east of Nuremberg. The historic city wall with its gates and the intact old town form the special character of the festival mile: the stages are set against buildings from the late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
The 50th edition of the Amberger Altstadtfest will be staged as a three-day event for the first time: from Friday, June 12, to Sunday, June 14, 2026. Previously, the festival usually ran for two days. With this extension, ACC Amberg aims to give the anniversary special prominence while also providing more stage time for the growing program offerings.
As always, the official opening by the mayor will take place on the Marktplatz, and additional stages for bands, school groups, clubs, cabaret, and dance will be set up in the surrounding streets and squares. The complete daily program will be communicated from June 2026 via the Altstadtfest app and the portal die-altstadt-feiert.de.
As of Spring 2026, the following program levels are confirmed. Exact performance times for bands will be published shortly before the festival in the official app.
