About Wingertshäuschen-Wanderung

The Alzey Vineyard Hut Hike – popularly known as the 'Wingertshäuschen-Wanderung' – is a unique format of Rhenish-Hessian wine culture. On a Sunday in September, the vineyard huts in the areas between Alzey, Heimersheim, and Weinheim open their doors and become small open-air wine taverns. Families, hiking groups, and wine lovers roam the vineyard terraces from 11 am to 6 pm, tasting a different wine at each hut, enjoying regional specialties, and learning firsthand from the vintners what defines a Rhenish-Hessian vineyard site. The 36th edition in 2026 continues this tradition established in 1991.

The Alzeyer Weinbergshäuschen-Wanderung – also called 'Wingertshäuschen-Wanderung' – is one of the most beautiful and original wine festival formats in Rheinhessen. Since 1991, vintners from the city of Alzey and its districts Heimersheim and Weinheim have opened their vineyard huts to the public on the first Sunday in September.

What are Vineyard Huts?

Vineyard huts – 'Wingertshäuschen' in Rhenish-Hessian dialect – are small, often historic buildings in the vineyards. They originally served as shelters for vintners during work, as tool sheds, or as meeting points. Many were built in the 19th or early 20th century, some are older, some younger. Today, they are symbols of Rhenish-Hessian viticultural tradition.

Hiking as the Format

Instead of a classic festival ground, hiking is the format: Visitors walk from hut to hut, tasting a different wine at each, sampling various dishes, and meeting different vintners. This format combines exercise, nature, wine tasting, and personal encounters.

Three Districts, Many Vineyards

The participating huts are located in the vineyard areas of the city of Alzey and its districts Heimersheim and Weinheim. This opens up a generous network of trails through the Rhenish-Hessian hills, suitable for day hikes as well as short walks with a selection of stops.

11 am to 6 pm

The opening hours from 11 am to 6 pm cover the entire day, allowing for flexible tour planning. Those who take their time can visit between 5 and 10 huts, take a break in the afternoon, and return comfortably in the evening.

Social and Tourist Significance

The event has an impact far beyond its festival day: it unites the vintners, creates tourist attention for Alzey's vineyard sites, promotes hiking culture, and strengthens awareness of the wine-growing landscape as a cultural asset.
