Altriper Faschingsumzug

The Altriper Faschingsumzug on Rosenmontag is a special event in the Palatinate Carnival calendar. While most Palatinate parades in the Vorderpfalz region take place on Faschingsdienstag, Altrip is one day earlier, organizing the parade on Rosenmontag – with the traditional addition of "mit Kehraus".

Karnevalsgesellschaft „Die Wasserhinkle"

The organizer is the Karnevalsgesellschaft „Die Wasserhinkle" Altrip e.V., one of the traditional carnival clubs in the southern Vorderpfalz. The club name "Wasserhinkle" comes from the Palatinate dialect and means water hen (a water-loving bird) – a humorous reference to Altrip's location directly on the Rhine. Such animal-themed, carnival club names are typical in the Palatinate and create a strong regional identity.

Rosenmontag mit Kehraus

The term "Kehraus" traditionally denotes the last, exuberant dance before Ash Wednesday in carnival – the definitive "sweeping out" of the carnival season. In Altrip, the Rosenmontag parade is explicitly called "Umzug mit Kehraus", giving it a special character: it's not just about the parade, but about the exuberant farewell to the carnival campaign.

Parade Sequence

Like all Palatinate Faschingsumzüge, the Altriper Rosenmontag parade features floats, walking groups, music bands, and guards. Carnival clubs from Altrip and neighboring communities – Neuhofen, Mutterstadt, Waldsee, Mannheim, Ludwigshafen – are invited. Sweets ("Bonbons"), "Strüssjer" (small bouquets), and promotional gifts are thrown into the crowd, while carnival-goers in costumes line the route.

Altrip and Carnival

Despite the community's modest size of just under 8,000 inhabitants, Altriper Karneval is a serious tradition. In recent years, the police have consistently given positive assessments of the parades in Altrip, Mutterstadt, Neuhofen, and Waldsee – a network of southern Vorderpfalz carnival strongholds. The Altriper parade on Rosenmontag offers the opportunity to experience the Palatinate carnival season over two days.

Altrip in the Rheinauen Association

Altrip belongs to the Rheinauen association, along with Neuhofen, Otterstadt, and Waldsee. With its long Roman-antique past as the fortress "Alta Ripa" and its location directly on the Rhine opposite Mannheim, the community has developed a distinct identity that is also expressed in its carnival.
