About Advent Clemenswerth

The Advent at Clemenswerth Castle is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric Christmas markets in the Emsland region, combining a festive market atmosphere with the unique backdrop of a baroque palace complex. On the 2nd weekend of Advent 2026 — presumably on Saturday, December 12th (from 1 p.m.) and Sunday, December 13th (from 11 a.m.) — the castle park will be transformed into a festive Advent market with around 100 exhibitors presenting high-quality arts and crafts, delicacies, Christmas gifts, and specialities. Clemenswerth Castle, the former hunting and pleasure palace of Elector Clemens August and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status, forms the unique setting that makes this Christmas market one of the special places of the Advent season in Lower Saxony.

Clemenswerth Castle — UNESCO Candidate as Advent Stage

Clemenswerth Castle in Sögel, built by Johann Conrad Schlaun between 1737 and 1747 for Elector Clemens August of Cologne, is one of Northern Germany's most unique baroque ensembles. The star-shaped complex with a central main pavilion and eight surrounding 'Kavaliershäuser' (gentlemen's houses) now houses the Emsland Museum and is a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list. During Advent, the castle transforms into a special stage: the historic buildings are festively illuminated, the castle paths are decorated with fir branches and fairy lights, and the eight gentlemen's houses, along with the main pavilion, provide a spectacular backdrop for a very special kind of Christmas market.

Around 100 Exhibitors with Arts and Crafts and Delicacies

With around 100 exhibitors, Advent at Clemenswerth offers a selection rarely found in this quality. The exhibitors are carefully curated: artisans present ceramics, textiles, woodwork, jewelry, carvings, and Christmas decorations. Delicacy exhibitors offer regional specialities, fine wines, handmade liqueurs, jams, honey, and festive sweets. This distinguishes the market from many commercial Christmas markets and appeals to visitors who value quality and authenticity.

Atmosphere and Program

The atmosphere of the Advent market is characterized by the combination of the baroque palace complex, festive lighting, Christmas music, and culinary offerings — mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, gingerbread, candied almonds. Over the two market days, musical performances often complement the program: brass ensembles, choir ensembles, and Christmas concerts in one of the gentlemen's houses. The castle's cafeteria is open, and the museum offers special Advent tours and extended opening hours.

Getting There and Practical Information

Clemenswerth Castle is located slightly outside Sögel in the western Hümmling region and is easily accessible via the A31 motorway (Sögel-Werlte exit). Free parking is available at the castle. The market opens on Saturday from 1 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m., allowing visitors to spend either a relaxed afternoon or a whole day in the festively decorated castle park. In cold temperatures — and December can be frosty in the Hümmling region — warm clothing is recommended.
