Atmospheric Christmas market in front of a baroque castle backdrop — around 100 exhibitors on the 2nd weekend of Advent at Clemenswerth Castle
Clemenswerth Castle in Sögel, built by Johann Conrad Schlaun between 1737 and 1747 for Elector Clemens August of Cologne, is one of Northern Germany's most unique baroque ensembles. The star-shaped complex with a central main pavilion and eight surrounding 'Kavaliershäuser' (gentlemen's houses) now houses the Emsland Museum and is a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list. During Advent, the castle transforms into a special stage: the historic buildings are festively illuminated, the castle paths are decorated with fir branches and fairy lights, and the eight gentlemen's houses, along with the main pavilion, provide a spectacular backdrop for a very special kind of Christmas market.
With around 100 exhibitors, Advent at Clemenswerth offers a selection rarely found in this quality. The exhibitors are carefully curated: artisans present ceramics, textiles, woodwork, jewelry, carvings, and Christmas decorations. Delicacy exhibitors offer regional specialities, fine wines, handmade liqueurs, jams, honey, and festive sweets. This distinguishes the market from many commercial Christmas markets and appeals to visitors who value quality and authenticity.
The atmosphere of the Advent market is characterized by the combination of the baroque palace complex, festive lighting, Christmas music, and culinary offerings — mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, gingerbread, candied almonds. Over the two market days, musical performances often complement the program: brass ensembles, choir ensembles, and Christmas concerts in one of the gentlemen's houses. The castle's cafeteria is open, and the museum offers special Advent tours and extended opening hours.
Clemenswerth Castle is located slightly outside Sögel in the western Hümmling region and is easily accessible via the A31 motorway (Sögel-Werlte exit). Free parking is available at the castle. The market opens on Saturday from 1 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m., allowing visitors to spend either a relaxed afternoon or a whole day in the festively decorated castle park. In cold temperatures — and December can be frosty in the Hümmling region — warm clothing is recommended.
The two market days will transform the castle grounds into a festive Christmas market. The exact opening hours and accompanying program will be announced by the museum in advance on clemenswerth.de.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the autumn. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
