Clemenswerth Castle in Sögel, built by Johann Conrad Schlaun between 1737 and 1747 for Elector Clemens August of Cologne, is one of Northern Germany's most unique baroque ensembles. The star-shaped complex with a central main pavilion and eight surrounding 'Kavaliershäuser' (gentlemen's houses) now houses the Emsland Museum and is a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list. During Advent, the castle transforms into a special stage: the historic buildings are festively illuminated, the castle paths are decorated with fir branches and fairy lights, and the eight gentlemen's houses, along with the main pavilion, provide a spectacular backdrop for a very special kind of Christmas market.

Atmosphere and Program

The atmosphere of the Advent market is characterized by the combination of the baroque palace complex, festive lighting, Christmas music, and culinary offerings — mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, gingerbread, candied almonds. Over the two market days, musical performances often complement the program: brass ensembles, choir ensembles, and Christmas concerts in one of the gentlemen's houses. Getting There and Practical Information

Clemenswerth Castle is located slightly outside Sögel in the western Hümmling region and is easily accessible via the A31 motorway (Sögel-Werlte exit). Free parking is available at the castle. The market opens on Saturday from 1 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m., allowing visitors to spend either a relaxed afternoon or a whole day in the festively decorated castle park. In cold temperatures — and December can be frosty in the Hümmling region — warm clothing is recommended.
