Aachen Celebrates the Mobility Transition

The Aachen Cycling and Mobility Day is the central event of the city's mobility campaign #aachenbewegt. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Elisenbrunnen and the Market Square will be transformed into a grand stage for cycling culture, e-mobility, and sustainable transport solutions. Admission is free.

Penny-Farthing School, Nostalgic Playground, and Course

At Elisenbrunnen, demonstrations and hands-on activities will take place throughout the day:

  • Penny-farthing School — Learn to ride and fall on historic penny-farthings
  • Nostalgic Playground for children with classic play equipment
  • Bicycle Test Circuit with advice from local bike dealers
  • Used Bicycle Market — Citizens sell their bikes
  • Bike Wash Station
  • Rickshaw Rides for seniors and people with limited mobility
  • Road Safety Course

E-Mobility at the Market

At the Aachen Market Square, local car dealerships will present current e-vehicle models — from small cars to cargo bike equivalents. Test drives are possible, as are consultations on funding programs and charging infrastructure.

Live Program and Four Guided Tours

On stage, the Big Band (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), the Inda-Gymnasium School Choir (1 p.m.–2 p.m.), and the student circus Configurani from Viktoria School (3 p.m.–4 p.m.) will provide the atmosphere. Four guided hidden route tours will start at Elisenbrunnen:

  • 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. — Hidden Routes I (5.8 km) and II (7.6 km)
  • 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. — Kids on Tour (6.5 km, 45 minutes)

Aachen — City of Short Distances

Aachen is the westernmost major city in Germany, an independent city in the administrative district of Cologne, and located in the tri-border area of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The compact city center around the Cathedral, Town Hall, and Elisenbrunnen is ideal for cycling — the mobility day shows how a bicycle-friendly city center can function. Partners include the AVV (Aachen Transport Association) and the aachen50plus initiative.

Cycling and Mobility Day — edition 2026

Grand Cycling and Mobility Day in Aachen's city center on May 9, 2026. Program around Elisenbrunnen and Market Square with penny-farthing school, nostalgic playground, bike tests, used bike market, cargo bike rental, e-mobility show, four guided hidden route tours, and stage program (Big Band, choir, circus). Part of the #aachenbewegt campaign.

The 2026 edition builds on the proven format of previous years, doubles the number of guided hidden route tours, and integrates cargo bike rental for the first time. Focus 2026: School routes and family mobility — the Kids on Tour routes in particular aim to encourage children and parents to switch to cycling.
