Two-day anniversary festival celebrating the 450th anniversary of the historic Old Chapel Calberlah
The Old Chapel Calberlah is one of the oldest surviving sacred buildings in the Gifhorn district. Its oldest surviving structure – the gable wall with the inscription from 1576 – marks the 450th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2026. The first mention of a church building at this site dates back to 1534. Over the centuries, the chapel has survived the Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, industrialization, and both World Wars, and is today a vibrant meeting place for the Evangelical parish of Calberlah.
The simple chapel, unassuming from the outside, contains remarkable historical furnishings inside. The wooden pulpit altar, the gallery, and the old gravestones tell of the place's eventful history. The intimate spatial effect and acoustic qualities make the chapel a cherished venue for spiritual concerts and chamber music performances.
Calberlah is located in the south of the Gifhorn district, nestled in the Boldecker Land region between the Mittelland Canal and the Aller river. The village is part of the Samtgemeinde Isenbüttel and home to an active local history society that preserves the historical substance and passes on knowledge about the local history. With about 2,800 inhabitants, Calberlah has retained its village-like, rural character.
The Calberlah parish, the local history society, and the Friends of the Old Chapel have put together a diverse program for the anniversary weekend. A festive service, lectures on the building's and faith's history, concerts, tours, and a community festival on the church square with food and drinks are intended to celebrate and commemorate the chapel's significance for generations.
The festival weekend begins on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with a public lecture on the chapel's history and guided tours of the historic structure. In the evening, a first festive concert will take place – featuring organ and choral music from several centuries, showcased in the chapel's unique acoustics.
Sunday, August 30, 2026, is dedicated to the festive service with the participation of several guest preachers, followed by a community festival on the church square with food, drinks, and music. Further lectures and tours in the afternoon will round off the program. The chapel's historical character and the community's engagement give the festival its special atmosphere.
