Laser light space installation by Manfred “Ollie” Olma in the Konstantin Basilica — Kick-off of the World Heritage Anniversary Year
The Konstantin Basilica (Latin "Aula Palatina") was built around 310 as the audience hall of the imperial palace. With an interior length of 67 meters, a width of 27 meters, and a height of 33 meters, it was one of the largest interior spaces of Roman antiquity — and remains the largest preserved column-free space from Roman times to this day. Since 1856, it has served the Protestant community of Trier as a church; together with the other Roman buildings of Trier, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
This extraordinary architecture forms the stage for the opening light installation of the 2026 World Heritage Anniversary Year. Trier light artist Manfred “Ollie” Olma — known for large-scale laser light spaces in historic buildings — is creating a walk-in sound and light space that makes the ancient architecture newly experienceable through contemporary light settings. Geometric laser projections, atmospheric soundscapes, and a live organ improvisation on the Konstantin Basilica organ combine to create a multi-sensory overall impression.
In front of the Basilica, a winter outdoor lounge with standing tables, mulled wine, and snacks will be set up, where visitors can linger before and after the performance. The event is family-friendly and free of charge.
The installation officially opens Trier's World Heritage Anniversary Year “40 Years UNESCO World Heritage Trier”. Over nine days, the Konstantin Basilica is transformed into a multi-sensory experiential space where the ancient architecture can be experienced anew through laser light art and live organ improvisation. The performances are completely free and suitable for all age groups.
