170 Years of Marksmen Tradition in the Teufelsmoor: Parade, King's Shoot, Rock Concert with Stone Washed on the Village Square
The Gnarrenburg Marksmen's Society was founded in the 19th century and will look back on 170 Marksmen's Festivals in 2026. This is remarkable continuity, standing out even in the tradition-rich state of Lower Saxony. Generations of Gnarrenburg residents have supported the club's life, organized the festival weekend, and passed down the customs to their successors.
The Marksmen's Festival spans two days. The sporting core consists of the bird and king's shooting, where the new majesties are determined. The parade through the Gnarrenburg village with the marching band, friendly clubs, and the royal court is one of the most visible traditions of the festival. The population lines the route, houses are decorated, and windows are adorned with small marksmen's flags.
A special feature of the 2026 anniversary edition: On Saturday evening, June 13th, at 8:00 PM, the rock band Stone Washed will play a concert on the Dorfplatz. With this, the Marksmen's Society combines tradition with contemporary stage music, appealing particularly to a younger audience that is otherwise less frequently found at traditional Marksmen's Festivals.
On Sunday, June 14th, the communal aspect takes center stage: church service, king's dinner in the festival tent, crowning of the new majesties, and the festival finale. The royal court will represent the Marksmen's Society in the following year at events, parades, and receptions.
The Marksmen's Festival is a meeting point for the entire village community. Former Gnarrenburg residents return for the weekend, families celebrate together, clubs and politicians are present. The festival grounds at the Dorfplatz become the social center of the Teufelsmoor village.
Saturday and Sunday form the festival weekend. Tradition, sporting competition, and a popular festival atmosphere blend together. The rock concert on Saturday evening adds a contemporary touch.
The highlight is the crowning of the new majesties on Sunday. The royal court will represent the society until the 171st Marksmen's Festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Gnarrenburg Marksmen's Society in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years.
