Oldest event in Worms β traditional Pentecost folk festival on the Kisselswiese by the Rhine
The Pfingstmarkt is the oldest continuously celebrated event in Worms. Its roots reach back to the Middle Ages, when the citizens of Worms held a market at Pentecost and indulged in festive activities after the fasting period. Over the centuries, the Pfingstmarkt has transformed from a trade market into a pure folk festival with rides and caterers β but the tradition has been preserved.
The venue is the Kisselswiese on the right bank of the Rhine β the same festival grounds where the famous Wormser Backfischfest takes place in August and September. The spacious meadow directly on the river offers space for a large festival tent, an extensive amusement park, food and confectionery stalls, as well as ample parking. Its direct location by the water lends the festival a special atmosphere, especially during the long summer evening hours.
The amusement park is the heart of the Pfingstmarkt. Classics like bumper cars, the Ferris wheel, wave flyers, carousels, and haunted houses meet modern high-speed rides such as 'Air Power' and 'Rapidos'. Showman families from all over Southern Germany travel to Worms for the nine days. Confectionery, snack, wine, and beer stands complement the gastronomic offerings.
Two dates are particularly noteworthy: Thursday, May 28th, is Family Day with reduced prices on all rides β ideal for families wanting to explore the amusement park with their children. On Friday, May 29th, a grand musical fireworks display will illuminate the Rhine after dark β one of the visual highlights of Worms' summer festival season. Synchronized to a specially composed musical score, a spectacle of light unfolds in the Worms night sky.
As with most folk festivals, admission to the Pfingstmarkt is free β costs are incurred only for rides and at the food stalls. The Pfingstmarkt is thus a true folk festival for everyone, from families with small children to groups of friends and the grandparent generation.
