Wollmesheim at the Gateway to the Southern Wine Route
Wollmesheim, as the western district of the city of Landau in der Pfalz, is located directly at the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest. The village is surrounded by vineyards and boasts a long winemaking tradition. The May and Wine Festival is one of the oldest events in the local calendar and marks the beginning of the numerous wine festivals that follow in the surrounding wine villages of the Southern Wine Route in the coming months.
Festival Setting: Parish Garden and Village Square
The venue for the festival is the historic village square with the adjacent parish garden. This offers a shady setting under old trees where the stalls of vintners, clubs, and vendors are set up. The atmosphere is familial: it's less about big stage shows and more about personal encounters between producers and guests.
Maypole and Wine Tasting
A tradition of the festival is the Maypole raising, organized by the local clubs. Simultaneously, wine stands operate, where Wollmesheim vintners present their Rieslings, Burgundies, and red wines. Culinary delights include classic Palatinate specialties, from Saumagen to bratwurst, flammkuchen, and quiche variations.
Embedded in a Festival Season
Wollmesheim celebrates more than just the May and Wine Festival. The village is also known for its Dampfknopp-Kerwe (a type of folk festival) at the end of August. Both festivals are supported by the Wollmesheim clubs and shape the social life in this small wine village on the outskirts of Landau.
