Overview

The 2025 Week of Democracy Oberhausen continued the festival format unique in North Rhine-Westphalia. Around the International Day of Democracy (September 15), the city, together with associations, schools, and citizen initiatives, offered a decentralized program of discussions, workshops, readings, concerts, and neighborhood gatherings.

The 2025 edition once again confirmed the Week of Democracy's status as the most important political education and participation format in the Ruhr area. The decentralized program — spread across Oberhausen's districts — offered citizens low-threshold access to democratic topics. From the UN Day of Democracy on September 15 to program items in schools, community centers, and cultural institutions, the common thread was a festival that addresses democracy as a lived practice rather than an abstract concept.

Programme

12 days of programming around the International Day of Democracy, decentralized across the city area.
