Overview

2025 was not yet a separate edition: "What If Berlin" will be realised for the first time in 2026 as an urban project by the Berliner Festspiele. In the run-up, preparatory research and workshop discussions on the history of unrealised Berlin projects and the festival's history took place in 2025 – forming the basis for the tour content in 2026.

The project “What If Berlin” is a premiere staging in 2026 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Berliner Festspiele. In 2025, preparatory research was conducted on the history of unrealised Berlin projects (urban development, artistic, festival projects), along with workshop discussions and castings for Tour Guides.

Akira Takayama in Berlin

The Japanese theatre maker worked in Berlin during several research phases in 2025 and developed the concept with the Berliner Festspiele team. “What If Berlin” thus joins a series of international urban projects that Takayama has realised with Port B in Tokyo, Frankfurt, Athens, and Bremen.
