Overview
On June 21, 2025, Vegesack celebrated its Matjestag at the Utkiek. The day began with the symbolic arrival of the first Matjes barrel of the season, which was brought across the Weser to the signal location by the barge Vegebüdel and carried by a delegation from the city garden around the Vegesacker Junge to the Utkiek.
Guests could expect Matjes dishes, cold drinks, and a cultural program with live music, harbor tours, and the festive awarding of the Matjes diploma. Afterwards, the organizers launched the first Vegesacker Matjeswochen: two weeks during which the district's restaurateurs presented various Matjes dishes — from Matjes burgers to sherry Matjes in a bun to Matjes 'n' Chips.
