A precursor edition of the Ukrainian Theatre Festival already took place in 2025 within Hamburg's independent theatre scene – with a similar format to 2026: three days of contemporary Ukrainian theatre with German surtitles, ensembles from Kharkiv and the Ukrainian diaspora in Northern Germany.
The 2025 edition laid the groundwork for the festival's firm establishment in Hamburg. The independent Hamburg theatre scene – with Flachsland Puppentheater, Lichthof Theater, Hoheluftschiff, and other venues – offers ideal infrastructural conditions for such diaspora and solidarity formats.
The Ukrainian community in the greater Hamburg area, with roots primarily in Barmbek, Wilhelmsburg, and Hamm, has gained significant visibility since 2022. Theatre festivals, concert evenings, and readings complement each other, making the state of Hamburg one of the more important locations for Ukrainian cultural life in exile.
