Overview

The 34th Tanztage Berlin in January 2025 continued the established rhythm of Sophiensæle: around two weeks of emerging choreographic work, a mix of world premieres and selected guest performances, curated with an eye on what is currently being explored in Berlin's independent dance scene. The festival once again utilized all three performance spaces — Festsaal, Hochzeitssaal, and Kantine — and strengthened the venue's platform logic with workshops and discourse formats.

The 2025 edition was already marked by the upcoming anniversary, preparing for the double celebration of 30 years of Tanztage / Sophiensæle. Young artists showcased their first or second Berlin stage works within a framework that consistently prioritizes emerging artist support over commercial logic. The festival remained in its essence what Tanztage has been since 1996: a concentrated January kickoff for the Berlin dance scene, dependent on the curatorial model and the Senate's funding policy — and where the audience can see which generation is currently working on the city's choreographic language.
