Caribbean meets Ruhr Area — “Castrop karibisch”

The Street Food & Beach Festival Castrop-Rauxel is one of the most unusual summer events in the northern Ruhr area. From Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21, 2026, the Altstadt-Marktplatz (old town market square) will be transformed into a three-day Caribbean holiday paradise — deliberately named “Castrop karibisch”. Sand will be brought in, palm trees will be erected, loungers and a beach volleyball court will complete the beach illusion right in the middle of the city market.

The Concept — Holiday on Your Doorstep

Organizers Stadtmarketing Castrop-Rauxel and partner Just Festivals explicitly promote the concept as a “holiday package at home”: Those who haven't booked a summer vacation or simply want to enjoy a Caribbean atmosphere for a weekend can experience it right in the center of Castrop-Rauxel — without travel stress, without flight costs.

What the Beach Zone Offers

  • Real sandy beach with loungers and umbrellas
  • Palm trees as atmospheric decoration
  • Beach volleyball court to join in
  • 15 food trucks with international cuisine — Caribbean, Asian, South American, Mediterranean, vegan
  • Cocktail bars with tropical cocktails (Pina Colada, Mojito, Caipirinha)
  • Live music on the market stage — Reggae, Latin, Salsa, Summer Pop
  • Family activities for children

Shopping Sunday for Families, June 21

Sunday, June 21, 2026, is a Shopping Sunday for families: The shops in Castrop-Rauxel's city center will open their doors — beach festival and relaxed shopping combined.

Castrop-Rauxel — The Intersection of Ruhr Area/Münsterland

Castrop-Rauxel (around 73,000 inhabitants) is a district town in the Kreis Recklinghausen at the transition from the Ruhr area to Münsterland. The town was heavily shaped by hard coal mining and is now undergoing structural change. The Street Food & Beach Festival is part of this positive renewal program — the city center is being revitalized with creative, atmospheric events and made attractive for visitors from the entire northern Ruhr area.
