Free open-air concert by the Staatsphilharmonie on the Platz der Deutschen Einheit for the Rheinuferfest 2026 with Diego Ceretta
Open-air classical concerts on the Rhine promenade are a popular format in many Rhineland cities. Ludwigshafen upholds this tradition with the Thursday concert for the Rheinuferfest, which the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz has been contributing for years as a festive musical prelude to the large Volksfest. The concept combines the full symphonic experience with a grand, democratic gesture: classical music is brought out of the concert hall into the public urban space, and access is free.
The venue is the Platz der Deutschen Einheit directly on the Rhine promenade. With stage construction, sound technology, and seating, the square becomes a large open-air concert hall for one evening, with views of the Rhine and the Mannheim skyline. The natural acoustics are enhanced by professional amplification to ensure a concert experience even in the rear areas.
At the podium is Diego Ceretta, chief conductor of the Staatsphilharmonie. The soloist is violinist Lorena Conunova. The program includes works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy – likely the famous Violin Concerto in E minor or an overture – and a symphony by Franz Schubert. This repertoire choice perfectly suits the open-air audience: melodic, romantic, and powerfully understandable.
The concert is part of the four-day Rheinuferfest, one of LUKOM's largest Volksfeste, featuring amusement rides, stage programs, culinary delights, and fireworks. The concert artistically elevates the festival – a statement by the city that Volksfest and high culture are not contradictory but mutually enriching.
The exact list of works and seating arrangements will be communicated by the organizer in advance. Recommendation: arrive early, as the concert was very well attended in previous years.
