Overview

The previous edition of Slices of Life took place in May 2025 at the Dahlem Research Campus. Here too, the focus was on ethnographic films from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania, with an emphasis on transcultural collaboration and provenance issues. As before, the organizers were the Ethnological Museum Berlin and GIEFF e.V.

The 2025 edition established the format of the two-day ethnographic film festival at the Dahlem Research Campus. Filmmakers from several continents were present in person or connected via video link for film discussions. Topics included restitution, provenance, decolonial collaboration, and the practical relationship between European museums and non-European origin communities.

The festival is part of a growing movement that is liberating ethnographic film from its traditional observer role and increasingly developing collaborative formats with filmmakers from the regions of origin. The cooperation between the Ethnological Museum and GIEFF e.V. provides an important public platform for this discourse in Berlin.
