Overview

The first edition of the Selfkant-Musical in summer 2025 brought the German-Dutch borderland identity to the open-air stage at Sportpark Höngen. Clubs from German and Dutch border villages participated, and the dance group Xanadu provided choreographic interludes. The performance received supra-regional attention and was praised by the Aachener Zeitung as a remarkable local project.

The premiere of the Selfkant-Musical established a new theatrical format in the westernmost tip of Germany: homeland theater as a borderland narrative, supported by local clubs and Dutch direction. The play dealt with the complex history of the Selfkant — its cession to the Netherlands in 1949 and its return in 1963 — as well as the region's dual cultural identity.

The success of the premiere led to the decision to continue the format as “Selfkant-Musical 2.0" in 2026 — expanded with new narrative segments and stronger Dutch participation.
