Traditional festival of the Bürgerschützenverein Heede in the municipality of Dörpen — King's shooting, parade, and social gathering on a July weekend
Heede is a municipality in the municipality of Dörpen in the district of Emsland, located on the river Ems and characterized for centuries by a distinct village community and a vibrant Catholic tradition. As in many places in Emsland, the marksmen's culture is a central element of village life in Heede. The Bürgerschützenverein sees itself as the custodian of this tradition and hosts the major Schützenfest every year, which shines far beyond the village.
The marksmen's tradition in Emsland has its roots in medieval guilds, which were founded for the defense of villages and the cultivation of civic virtues. From these origins, a lively festival tradition emerged, with the king's shooting forming the annual highlight. The Bürgerschützenverein Heede carefully preserves this tradition: from the solemn assembly of the marksmen and the festive parade through the village to the proclamation of the new majesties, the festival follows a firmly established sequence that is passed down from generation to generation.
The Schützenfest 2026 will take place on Friday, July 17th, and Saturday, July 18th. Friday evening is traditionally dedicated to the opening and the Schützenball, while Saturday is dedicated to the king's shooting and the subsequent proclamation of the king. Food and drinks will be served in the festival tent, a dance band will provide musical entertainment, and the King's Dinner on Saturday evening will be the crowning conclusion of the festival weekend.
The municipality of Dörpen is home to numerous active marksmen's clubs. The Bürgerschützenverein Heede maintains regular contact with friendly clubs in Neudersum (festival on May 8, 2026), Dersum (May 14, 2026), and Neurhede (July 10, 2026). These mutual visits create a dense network of relationships and underscore the supra-local character of Emsland's marksmen's tradition, which is far more than just a club affair.
The two festival days in Heede combine tradition, sport, and conviviality. Music, dancing, and dining will take place in the festival tent, while the marksmen gather during the day for the sporting competition for the title of king. The exact program schedule will be announced by the club in advance.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
