Three-day Schützenfest of the St. Hubertus Marksmen's Brotherhood Birken-Honigsessen 1968 e.V. on the first weekend of August
The St. Hubertus Marksmen's Brotherhood Birken-Honigsessen was founded in 1968, celebrating a younger but already well-established club tradition. As the name suggests, the brotherhood is dedicated to Saint Hubertus of Liège, the patron saint of hunters and marksmen, whose feast day is traditionally celebrated on November 3rd. With over 55 years of club history, the brotherhood has preserved the Schützen (marksmen's) customs in the Wisserland.
Birken-Honigsessen is a double place name for the two interconnected districts of Birken and Honigsessen in the municipality of Wissen. The close neighborly bond between the two places is also reflected in the joint marksmen's brotherhood that unites both districts and cultivates their traditions.
The Schützenfest takes place annually on the first weekend of August — in 2026 from Saturday, August 1st, to Monday, August 3rd. The three festival days span the weekend and offer a packed program of marksmen's traditions and social gatherings.
Saturday begins with the festival opening at the Schützenplatz, followed by the coronation of the new Schützenkönig from the King's shooting competition. Afterwards, the festival tent evening with live music or a DJ set takes place. Sunday features the festival service – the religious-traditional highlight related to the brotherhood's patron – followed by the Schützen parade in full uniform through the districts of Birken and Honigsessen, accompanied by a brass band. The King's Ball on Sunday evening is the festive dance event in honor of the King and Queen. Monday concludes with a Frühschoppen (morning pint) and final social hours.
The Wisserland – the region around the town of Wissen in the north of the Altenkirchen district – is characterized by a dense network of clubs and well-preserved traditional customs. Several marksmen's clubs schedule their Pentecost and summer Schützenfeste one after another, creating a rich program of traditions throughout the summer months in the region. The Birken-Honigsessen Schützenfest is part of this chain and is a particularly popular date in August.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Festival opening at the Birken-Honigsessen Schützenplatz by the brotherhood's board. King's shooting competition at the shooting range to determine the new Schützenkönig (possibly already held the previous week). Coronation of the new King and Queen with the handover of the King's chain. Festival tent evening with live music or DJ set, catering, lively festival atmosphere.
Morning festival service in the Catholic parish church with liturgical accompaniment by the brotherhood. Afterwards, parade of the marksmen in full uniform through the districts of Birken and Honigsessen, accompanied by a brass band and with the King and Queen. Passing by the houses of the residents, who celebrate the festival day with flags and festive decorations. Evening King's Ball – the festive dance event in honor of the King and Queen, with live music, festive atmosphere, and upscale catering.
Morning Frühschoppen at the Schützenplatz with beer service, sausages, and bratwurst. Social gathering of brotherhood members, families, and festival guests. Gradual winding down of the festival during the day, farewell to the guests.
Detailed program 2026 will be published shortly before the date on the Wisserland pages wisserland.de.
