51st Schöningen Old Town Festival

A Tradition Since 1975

In 2026, the Schöninger Altstadtfest looks back on 51 years of history. What began as a small city festival in 1975 has developed into one of the largest Volksfeste (popular festivals) in the Helmstedt district. Generations of Schöningen residents have shaped, supported, and loved it.

Two Stages for Every Taste

The program is spread across two stages – one on the market square, one in the Brauhof. One focuses on rock, pop, and cover bands for an adult audience, while the other often favors Schlager, country, and party formats. This way, every visitor finds their program.

Market Square and Brauhof

Schöningen's historic market square, with the town hall and the Vinzenz Church, forms the heart of the festival. The Brauhof complements the area with a second, more intimate festival space, primarily used for catering and smaller concerts.

Market Stalls, Carousel, and Rides

Market vendors, showmen, and carousel operators complete the picture of a classic North German city festival. Food stalls offer bratwurst, fries, crepes, ice cream, sweets, and savory specialties. Beer stands, wine bars, and cocktail bars keep the evening lively.

Schöninger Werbegemeinschaft e.V.

The organizer is the Schöninger Werbegemeinschaft e.V., an association of Schöningen's retailers, restaurateurs, and service providers. The enormous effort is managed through sponsorships, municipal support, and the voluntary commitment of its members.

Sunday Shopping

Traditionally, Sunday of the Altstadtfest weekend is a day for open-door shopping. Schöningen's shops open their doors, taking advantage of the high visitor frequency and adding a retail strategy component to the city festival.
