Overview

In 2025, the Schaumburgfest once again transformed the ruins above Schalkau into a vibrant medieval world for three days. Minstrels, jester troupes, knight camps, and merchants populated the castle courtyard and ramparts. With the proceeds from the festival weekend, the Schaumburg Association once again funded the maintenance of the castle ruins — an exemplary case of volunteer monument preservation in the Sonneberg district.

The 2025 edition continued the long-standing tradition. Minstrels enlivened the evenings, knight camps and jester troupes dominated the days, and merchants offered medieval goods. Families with children found activities, and a tavern play concluded the Sunday program. With the revenue from the festival, the Schaumburg Association continued its restoration and preservation work on the castle ruins — an example of the synergy between festival culture and monument preservation in southern Thuringia.
