Overview

The Markgröningen Schäferlauf 2025 took place on the last weekend of August in its traditional format. The shepherd race, Bartel-Spiel play, festive parade with over 50 groups, craft market, and amusement park in the half-timbered old town once again attracted around 100,000 visitors to the town in the Ludwigsburg district.

Festival Tradition in the Half-Timbered Town

The 2025 edition continued the tradition of the Schäferlauf. As every year, the crowning of the Shepherd King and Queen after the barefoot run across the stubble field was the centerpiece of Sunday morning. This was followed by the grand festive parade through the old town — featuring shepherd guilds, historical costume groups, brass bands, and traditional costume wearers from across the state of Baden-Württemberg.

The Bartel-Spiel was performed multiple times over the weekend, the craft market with around 150 stalls enlivened the alleys of the half-timbered old town, and the amusement park provided family highlights. The combination of historical depth, living customs, and folk festival atmosphere once again made the 2025 Schäferlauf one of the best-attended traditional festivals in Southern Germany.
