Overview

On July 27, 2021, the Lower Germanic Limes — the ancient Roman border line on the Rhine from Bonn to Nijmegen — was added to the World Heritage List at the UNESCO World Heritage Conference in Fuzhou (China). This historic recognition was the occasion for the current 5-year anniversary in 2026 in Neuss, one of the most important Limes sites.

The UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2021 honored 44 archaeological sites along the Lower Germanic Limes, 19 in Germany and 25 in the Netherlands. Neuss (Novaesium) is one of the most significant sites — home to several legions over several centuries. The 5-year anniversary in 2026 will be celebrated with the Römerfest Neuss at the LAGA and special exhibitions at the Clemens-Sels Museum.
