Ship parade and music-synced grand fireworks over the UNESCO World Heritage town of Oberwesel on the Middle Rhine
"Rhine in Flames — Night of a Thousand Fires" is one of the most spectacular grand fireworks displays on the Middle Rhine and the annual highlight in Oberwesel's event calendar. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the UNESCO World Heritage town will transform into a glittering stage of illuminated old town, ship parade, and music-synced pyrotechnics.
The ship parade starts at 5 p.m.; the illumination of the old town begins around 9:20 p.m., followed by the music-synced grand fireworks from approx. 9:35 p.m. In parallel, the traditional Oberwesel Wine Market takes place — a special combination that makes the event a complete experience.
"Rhine in Flames" is a brand name representing a series of five major fireworks and ship parade events along the Middle Rhine between Bingen-Rüdesheim and Koblenz. The event in Oberwesel, with the subtitle "Night of a Thousand Fires", is one of the most impressive stops and traditionally takes place on the second weekend of September.
The concept combines three spectacular elements into a holistic experience. The ship parade starts in the late afternoon, with dozens of illuminated ships cruising down the Rhine. Onboard these vessels — from small passenger boats to large Rhine steamers — are thousands of passengers experiencing the spectacle up close. The ships are adorned with strings of lights, forming a glittering procession on the river as darkness falls.
As dusk settles, the illumination of the old town begins. The historic town walls, defensive towers, and half-timbered houses are bathed in colourful light from around 9:20 p.m.; Bengal fires along the town wall and on the towers create an atmosphere that impressively pays tribute to the history of the medieval town. With 16 preserved defensive towers, Oberwesel boasts one of the best-preserved town fortifications in Germany; the illumination showcases these historic structures in all their glory.
The absolute highlight is the music-synced grand fireworks, launched above the town from approx. 9:35 p.m. Thousands of effects — colourful stars, golden rain, white flashes, palms — are precisely coordinated with a specially composed musical score. The reflection of the fireworks in the Rhine visually doubles the impact; the mirroring of the lights on the water's surface creates an almost surreal scene.
Concurrently with "Rhine in Flames", the traditional Oberwesel Wine Market takes place in the old town (September 10-13, 2026). This combination is a hallmark of the Oberwesel event: while other Rhine in Flames dates focus on the fireworks, Oberwesel offers a multi-day supporting programme and Middle Rhine wines that culinarily complement the spectacle.
The UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, with its castles — Schönburg above the town, Pfalzgrafenstein near Kaub downstream — provides an unparalleled setting for a spectacle that attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually.

The 2026 edition of Rhine in Flames in Oberwesel follows the proven concept of a ship parade, old town illumination, and music-synced grand fireworks. The unique combination with the concurrently running Oberwesel Wine Market makes the event a multi-day experience in the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage site.
