Overview

In preparation for the festival premiere in 2026, the three organizers — E-WERK Freiburg, Theater Freiburg, and Theater im Marienbad — met in 2025 for conceptual preparation. Initial research residencies with international artists, a studio session with Claire Cunningham, and several program workshops at the three venues provided the thematic direction for the 2026 festival.

2025 Preparation

In 2025, E-WERK Freiburg, Theater Freiburg, and Theater im Marienbad hosted several preparatory formats for Performing Democracy 2026: research residencies with international artists, program workshops, and conceptual meetings between the three institutions.

The goal was to develop a joint festival that performatively addresses the question of democracy, encounter, and resistance. The selection of international guest performances for 2026 — Claire Cunningham, Soa Ratsifandrihana, Panzetti/Ticconi, the Mexican lecture format “Backyard” — emerged during this preparatory year.
