Ten traditional Easter bonfires in Delmenhorst's districts
The Easter bonfire has a centuries-old tradition in Northern Germany. Originally a pagan spring custom, it was adopted by Christianity as a symbol of resurrection and new light. In Delmenhorst, many districts cherish this tradition with great dedication – the wood is collected over weeks, the woodpile is artfully stacked, and the preparations bring entire neighborhoods together.
In 2026, the fires will burn in the districts of Hasbergen-Mitte, Annenheide, Deichhorst, at Wilhelm-Tell-Weg, and at other locations announced by the city and organizers. The exact addresses and start times will be published in good time on the websites of the City of Delmenhorst and in local media.
Seven of the ten fires will burn on Holy Saturday, April 4, 2026. Three more will follow on Easter Sunday, April 5. The staggered timing allows you to visit several fires or attend a second one.
The organizers of the Easter bonfires are district associations, sports clubs, volunteer fire departments, and neighborhood initiatives. They handle registration, permits, stacking the wood, and catering. Often, the proceeds from the sale of sausages, drinks, and cakes are used for the club's treasury or for social causes.
Due to weather conditions, short-term cancellations may occur if storms or heavy rain endanger safety. Organizers and the city will provide information on current changes. Dogs should be kept on a leash, as flying sparks and large crowds can cause stress.
The 2026 Easter bonfires showcase Delmenhorst's vibrant club and neighborhood culture. Volunteers light the artfully stacked woodpiles spread across the city. Families, friends, and neighbors gather at the bonfires to kick off or wind down the long Easter holidays and enjoy the warm atmosphere by the fire.
The proceeds from the sale of food and drinks usually go into the club treasuries or social projects. Visiting an Easter bonfire also supports local club life.
