Special Halloween tour through the mysterious historic cellar labyrinth beneath Oppenheim's old town
The Oppenheim Cellar Labyrinth is one of Germany's most remarkable underground structures. Passages, rooms, and vaults extend over several levels beneath the houses of the old town, their exact extent not yet fully explored. The complex was created over centuries – as wine cellars, storage rooms, well systems, and in times of crisis, as escape routes.
On Halloween, the town of Oppenheim harnesses the special atmosphere of this underworld for an extraordinary event. Instead of the regular, culturally historical tours that take place year-round, a special tour is offered on October 31st, exploiting the eerie and mysterious potential of the passages.
The lighting is reduced to the absolute minimum. Torches and candles replace electric lighting, causing shadows to dance on the stone walls and leaving individual rooms in complete darkness. Costumed guides in historical or slightly spooky attire lead groups through the passages, telling stories based on real Oppenheim history or bordering on legend: about the Black Death that plagued the town, about hiding places during the Thirty Years' War, about alleged ghost sightings in the depths of the labyrinth.
The acoustics of the vaults enhance the effect: footsteps echo, voices sound distorted, occasional drips from the ceiling create a dramatic soundscape. The tour lasts a limited time – long enough for an intense experience, short enough to maintain suspense.
The Halloween special tour in the cellar labyrinth is not suitable for children under a certain minimum age and is aimed at adults and teenagers who enjoy an atmospheric, slightly spooky experience. The number of participants per tour is limited, and advance booking is required.
The 2026 edition follows the proven concept of the Halloween special tour: minimal lighting, costumed guides, atmospheric storytelling elements, and the natural power of the underground vaults.
The exact tour times for 2026 will be published by the Oppenheim Tourist Information in the autumn. The number of participants per tour is limited.
