About Martinimarkt Ahrweiler

The Martinimarkt Ahrweiler is a traditional one-day market that transforms the historic market square of Ahrweiler into a lively flea market in November. Stalls with arts and crafts, regional products, clothing, and autumnal specialties line the market square within the medieval city walls. Mulled wine, bratwurst, and sweet specialties complement the offerings. The market traditionally celebrates Saint Martin and marks the transition from autumn to Advent in Ahrweiler.

Tradition in November

The Martinimarkt dates back to the late medieval tradition of Martinus markets, which were celebrated in many Rhenish cities on or around November 11th. In Ahrweiler, the format has been preserved as a compact one-day flea market and is part of the event calendar of the historic old town.

Market Square within the City Walls

Ahrweiler's market square is located within the completely preserved medieval city walls. This location gives every market format a special atmosphere: closed half-timbered facades, the lime trees on the square, the city gates at the entrance. The Martinimarkt also creates impressive scenes that shape the city experience.

Flea Market and Autumnal Specialties

The stalls offer everything from clothing, fabrics, and household items to arts and crafts and regional products and sweet specialties. Mulled wine, bratwurst, and potato pancakes are typical for the autumn season. Families, day-trippers, and hikers on the Red Wine Trail meet in Ahrweiler on market day.

Transition to Advent

In Ahrweiler, the Martinimarkt forms the symbolic transition from autumn to Advent. A few weeks later, the Ahrweiler Christmas market begins, taking over the market square until shortly before Christmas. The Martinimarkt thus serves as a compact, one-day event at the beginning of the winter market season.
